Raising chickens in our city backyard has had many surprising and enjoyable fringe benefits.  While we expected things like a little extra work, some companionship, and eventually fresh eggs, it never occurred to me that the chickens would do yardwork.  We haven’t had to mow since the chickens were big enough to free-range in the yard.  I also didn’t realize how relaxing it is to just sit and watch six chickens interact with each other and the world around them.

We call it “Chicken TV.”  Far better than anything on the boob tube, I assure you.

There is something very relaxing about pouring a glass of ice cold sun tea and sitting outside on the steps or on the swing to watch the chickens at play.  It gives me an opportunity to enjoy our beautiful outdoors, to feel the sun on my face and the breeze against my skin and take in the fresh air.  The chickens provide ample comedy, with their chasing and clucking, their pecking and puttering around.   Their interactions are complex, and they clearly have a set social structure that is beyond my own understanding.  I love to marvel at it.

And without fail, eventually I stop seeing chickens at play and start simply being among the natural world that’s happening right in my yard.  The garden is growing.  Ants are crawling, bees are buzzing.  Birds are flitting around the feeder, squirrels are eyeing up the garden.  The yard is full of life.

Even the toddler gets into it.  While he prefers to chase the chickens around the yard (I swear we will have the skinniest, fittest chickens on earth), even he can appreciate what a wonder they are.

Before I know it, thirty minutes has passed, or forty-five, or an hour.  Instead of feeling drained like I do after an hour of screen time, I feel refreshed, renewed, and full of an appreciation for the complexity in such simple little things.

Isn’t it amazing how zoning out in nature makes you feel so much better in the end? I’ve been wanting to raise backyard chickens for several years, and am hoping to get to soon :)

  2. Chicken TV! Love it. We also have bee TV here. One strange benefit of our chix has been having to come home to put them in when it gets dark. It keeps us close to home, in a nice way.

  3. I loved this so much Jenn (and it makes me very jealous of you lol!). I can totally see the ‘chicken TV’ as being such an awesome entertainment! How cool that you’ve got so many great lessons from this experience – thank you for sharing! :)

  4. I really enjoy this. We’ve been thinking of chickens for a while now and the yard work factor may put Carl past the tipping point – hadn’t thought of that! I can almost picture it – the little ones being entertained by chickens while I relax and soak up the sun. Lovely thought.

  5. I so want to get some chickens! But even without our own brood, chickens are to be found everywhere else where we live so we do get to watch some good chicken TV on a regular basis (and goat, cow, insects …) My son started chasing one with a big stick whilst we were out on the beach this week so we definitely have o help him calm down on that game before we get some of our own otherwise it may not be such a relaxing experience! Soak up all the joys of nature – you’ve made me want to sit outside a while and just BE.

  6. I have to admit, I have ‘chicken envy.’ As little as three years ago, I would have never imagined wanting to own chickens, but something has been shifting in me, and I have now been talking about it regularly. I nearly got chicks this spring, but I wasn’t prepared. For me, 2013 will be the ‘year of the chicken(s)’ and I can hardly wait!

  9. This reminds me how much I miss our chickens – we have to give them to my father in law cos the neighbour’s dog was stressing them and they wouldn’t lay. Love chickens, we used to watch them every day – hahaha Chicken TV!!
